Airbnb will limit required checkout chores for reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026.

Why it matters: The policy draws a line between ordinary guest cleanup and turnover work typically performed by cleaners. It could make checkout expectations more consistent, while leaving hosts responsible for setting reasonable house rules.

  • Hosts generally may not require guests to strip beds, take trash offsite, or wash and put away dishes.
  • The rules apply to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026.
  • Hosts must disclose house rules at booking and cannot add new requirements later through messages, signs or in-person instructions.
  • Airbnb says enforcement may include warnings, required listing changes, reduced search visibility or further action under its terms.

Airbnb is updating its global policy on house rules and guest requests, drawing a line between ordinary courtesy and labor-intensive turnover work. Under the updated policy, hosts generally may not require tasks that take significant effort or time or would typically be performed by a cleaner.

That includes stripping bed linens, taking trash offsite, and washing and putting away dishes. Guests may still be asked to put used dishes in the sink, according to The Guardian.

The Guardian reported the change on Oct. 22, 2026. It applies to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026, so the updated rule is not yet effective for every existing reservation.

House rules and requests must appear in the designated listing section when guests book. Hosts cannot add new requirements later through messages, signs or in-person instructions.

Airbnb spokespersons told The Guardian that the company heard house rules could be “confusing, onerous and hard to manage.” Airbnb said it redesigned them to provide clearer expectations “with no surprises.”

The policy does not eliminate all checkout expectations. Hosts can continue to set reasonable rules covering checkout times, guest numbers, smoking, pets, quiet hours and locking up. Requests may also reflect local conditions, such as drought-related limits on showering or animal-proof trash containers in bear country.

The distinction is between ordinary mess and tasks that amount to turnover work. Guests are still expected to avoid excessive mess, damage and deep-cleaning requirements, according to Airbnb's guest guidance. Airbnb's policy describes enforcement that can include warnings, required listing changes, reduced search visibility and additional action under its terms.

By the numbers

  • Nov. 20, 2026 - Booking date from which the updated rules apply
  • 3 - Examples of generally prohibited labor-intensive chores: stripping beds, taking trash offsite, and washing and putting away dishes
  • 4 - Listed enforcement measures: warnings, required listing changes, reduced search visibility and further action under Airbnb's terms

Yes, but: The policy is not a blanket ban on checkout instructions. Hosts may still require reasonable conduct and local-condition rules, and guests remain responsible for avoiding excessive mess, damage and deep-cleaning requirements.

What's next: The updated rules apply to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026.
