Amazon, AEP and X-energy are evaluating a potential 960-MW nuclear project in Indiana.

Why it matters: The proposal would combine potential nuclear generation for the regional grid with power for Amazon data centers. It remains a feasibility and development effort, not a construction commitment.

  • The companies announced their joint development agreement on October 19, 2026.
  • The potential facility would use 12 Xe-100 modules rated at 80 megawatts each.
  • The site under consideration is the former Breed Generating Station in Fairbanks Township, Sullivan County, Indiana.
  • Amazon would fund development work and could buy power under a long-term contract if the project proceeds.

Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power are evaluating a potential nuclear project at the former Breed Generating Station site in Fairbanks Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. The companies' announcement is dated October 19, 2026, in their joint development agreement.

The proposal calls for 12 X-energy Xe-100 small modular reactor modules, each rated at 80 megawatts, for a potential 960 megawatts of proposed nameplate capacity. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's page lists the Xe-100 under pre-application activities, meaning regulator and applicant discussions before a formal license application. The project is not described there as having received construction authorization.

Amazon would fund development work and intends to purchase electricity through a long-term contract if the project reaches a final investment decision - a formal decision to proceed with the investment - and is built and operated, according to AEP. The companies say the plant would serve the regional grid as well as Amazon data centers.

The proposal remains subject to site, financing, licensing, permitting, economic and other conditions. The NRC has not issued a construction permit for the project, and the companies have announced no construction or commercial-operation timeline.

The Breed site has been inactive since March 31, 1994, and is owned by Indiana Michigan Power, an AEP subsidiary. Amazon estimates the project could create more than 1,000 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent jobs; those figures are company projections, not an independent assessment. Amazon and X-energy describe the Indiana effort as the second commercial deployment covered by their broader collaboration, which targets more than 5 gigawatts of new U.S. nuclear capacity by 2039. Amazon led X-energy's 2024 Series C-1 financing round, which closed at $700 million, according to Amazon.

By the numbers

  • 960 MW - potential proposed nameplate capacity
  • 12 - proposed Xe-100 modules, at 80 MW each
  • 1,000-plus - construction jobs Amazon estimates the project could create

Yes, but: The project is still at the feasibility and development stage. Its capacity, site, financing, licensing, permits and construction remain subject to further decisions, and the job figures come from Amazon.

What's next: The companies have announced no construction or commercial-operation timeline. The project would first need to advance through development, licensing and permitting, followed by a final investment decision.
