OpenAI and Google each say their AI products have hit 1 billion-user scale, but the metrics differ.

Why it matters: The headline numbers suggest a tie, but they measure different things. Google’s 950 million figure refers to the Gemini app, while OpenAI’s claim covers more than 1 billion people using ChatGPT, not a monthly-active-user count.

  • The Verge reported Aug. 11, 2026, that ChatGPT and Gemini each crossed 1 billion users.
  • Alphabet said in July 2026 that the Gemini app had 950 million monthly active users.
  • Sundar Pichai said on X that a billion people are using Gemini every month and called it Google’s fastest-growing product ever.
  • OpenAI said Aug. 6 that more than 1 billion people are putting ChatGPT to work, without giving a monthly-active-user figure.

The two biggest consumer AI products are now both being described as 1 billion-user businesses, but the underlying measures are not the same. That makes the comparison useful as a signal of scale, but not a clean apples-to-apples matchup.

On Google’s side, Alphabet said in its Q2 2026 shareholder update that the Gemini app had 950 million monthly active users. Sundar Pichai later posted on X that a billion people are using Gemini every month and called it Google’s fastest-growing product ever. The Verge said Google's figures appear to refer to the Gemini app itself, not every Gemini integration across Google products.

OpenAI's wording is broader. In an Aug. 6 blog post, the company said more than 1 billion people are putting ChatGPT to work. The company did not provide a monthly-active-user figure in that post.

Reuters reported, based on Sensor Tower estimates, that ChatGPT had crossed 1 billion global monthly active app users in May 2026. That was an estimate, not a confirmed company milestone.

The reporting underscores how quickly consumer AI tools have scaled - and how carefully the definitions behind user milestones matter.

By the numbers

  • 950 million - Alphabet's reported monthly active users for the Gemini app in July 2026.
  • More than 1 billion - OpenAI's claim for people using ChatGPT, as stated Aug. 6.
  • 1 billion - Reuters, citing Sensor Tower estimates, said ChatGPT reached global monthly active app users in May 2026.

Yes, but: The figures are not directly comparable: Google's number is a monthly active user count for the Gemini app, while OpenAI's is a broader user claim without a MAU figure.
