China’s August surplus widened even as imports beat forecasts, underscoring a still-uneven domestic rebound.

Why it matters: A wider surplus can support growth but also signals that Beijing may still need more domestic stimulus. It also risks adding fresh trade friction with the U.S. as Chinese exports stay strong.

  • Reuters reported China’s August exports rose 25% year on year in U.S. dollar terms, while imports rose 28.2%, below economists' 30% forecast.
  • The trade surplus widened to about $119.09 billion from $112.5 billion in July, according to Reuters.
  • China's General Administration of Customs said August goods trade totaled 4.65 trillion yuan, with exports up 18.6% and imports up 21.7% in yuan terms.
  • The customs bureau said January-August goods imports and exports rose 3.5% from a year earlier to 34.78 trillion yuan.

China said on Sept. 8 that August trade remained strong, with exports continuing to outpace imports and the monthly surplus widening. Reuters reported the dollar-based figures, while the official customs release showed August goods trade totaled 4.65 trillion yuan.

In yuan terms, exports rose 18.6% from a year earlier and imports increased 21.7%, according to the General Administration of Customs. The bureau also said January-August goods imports and exports rose 3.5% from a year earlier to 34.78 trillion yuan.

AP reported that the stronger export performance came as Chinese shipments continued to benefit from overseas demand, even as imports reflected a more uneven domestic recovery. AP said the U.S. trade gap remained a key focus because it can feed political pressure in Washington.

The customs bureau said China’s surplus with the U.S. reached $29.18 billion in August, with exports to the U.S. up 34.4% year on year. The data suggest Beijing still has external demand helping growth, but domestic demand has not fully matched that momentum.

By the numbers

  • 25% - China’s August exports rose that much in dollar terms, Reuters reported.
  • $119.09 billion - The August trade surplus, up from $112.5 billion in July.
  • 3.5% - January-August goods imports and exports rose that much in yuan terms.

Yes, but: China publishes customs data in yuan, while Reuters and AP also report converted dollar figures, so the two sets of numbers are not directly comparable.
