China’s factory activity shrank again in August, though the decline was milder than expected.

Why it matters: A weaker industrial backdrop in the world’s second-largest economy can weigh on global demand, commodities, exporters and supply chains. It also increases pressure on Beijing to add policy support as domestic demand stays soft.

  • China’s official manufacturing PMI rose to 49.8 in August from 49.2 in July, but stayed below 50.
  • The reading marked a second straight month of contraction in the factory sector.
  • The August PMI beat the Reuters poll consensus of 49.6.
  • China’s non-manufacturing PMI was 49.0 in August, unchanged from July, while the composite PMI rose to 49.5 from 49.3.

China’s official manufacturing PMI improved in August, but not enough to return to expansion. The National Bureau of Statistics said the index rose to 49.8 from 49.2 in July, still below the 50-point line that separates growth from contraction. The government release said 16 of 21 surveyed industries reported higher PMI readings from July.

The result was slightly better than the Reuters poll consensus of 49.6, but it still marked a second consecutive month of contraction in the factory sector. Reuters said the data pointed to persistently weak domestic demand and added to pressure on policymakers to support growth. Its report also tied the weakness to softer services and construction activity and a sluggish property backdrop.

China’s non-manufacturing PMI stayed at 49.0 in August, unchanged from July, while the composite PMI edged up to 49.5 from 49.3, according to official data. The services and construction release and SCMP reporting both showed the broader economy remained below the expansion threshold.

Huo Lihui, chief statistician at the National Bureau of Statistics, said the data reflected an "improvement in China’s overall economy." Still, the August reading underscores how fragile the recovery remains as Beijing weighs further support.

By the numbers

  • 49.8 - China’s official manufacturing PMI in August 2026
  • 49.2 - July 2026 manufacturing PMI
  • 49.0 - August 2026 non-manufacturing PMI

Yes, but: The August manufacturing reading improved and beat expectations, but it remained in contraction and the broader non-manufacturing gauge also stayed below 50.
