Commonwealth Fusion Systems said it raised $1 billion more, bringing total funding to $4 billion.

Why it matters: The new capital helps keep one of the best-funded fusion startups on track toward a first commercial plant. It also shows continued investor appetite for utility-scale fusion power as big energy users look for new supply.

  • CFS announced the financing on July 30, 2026, in a company post and in TechCrunch's reporting.
  • The company said the latest $1 billion brings its total funding to $4 billion.
  • CFS said the money will support SPARC and the design of Arc, its first commercial plant planned for Chesterfield County, Virginia.
  • CFS said SPARC is expected to reach scientific breakeven in 2027 and that Arc is planned at 400 MW.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems said it raised another $1 billion as it pushes ahead on SPARC, its demonstration reactor, and Arc, its first commercial power plant. The company said the new money lifts total funding to $4 billion, according to TechCrunch and CFS's announcement.

CFS said the round included institutional investors such as pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and industrial and infrastructure corporate partners, though it did not name them. The company said the capital will support SPARC and the design work for Arc.

In a separate company post, CFS said SPARC is now expected to reach scientific breakeven in 2027. Scientific breakeven means the fusion reaction produces more energy than is needed to start it, but it does not mean power is flowing to the grid. CFS has also said Arc is planned as a 400 MW plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

The company has been building a commercial lineup around that plant. Google said in June 2025 that it would buy 200 MW from CFS's planned first commercial plant, and Eni said in September 2025 that it had signed a power purchase agreement worth more than $1 billion. In April 2026, CFS said it became the first fusion power plant developer to apply to connect to PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. wholesale electricity market.

CFS also said in January 2026 that it was working with NVIDIA and Siemens on a digital twin of SPARC to speed engineering and simulation. The company did not say whether the new $1 billion was a newly closed round or an extension of prior financing.

By the numbers

  • 1 billion - New capital CFS said it raised in the latest financing
  • 4 billion - Total funding CFS said it has now raised
  • 400 MW - Planned size of Arc, CFS's first commercial plant

Yes, but: CFS's timeline still depends on future milestones, including SPARC reaching scientific breakeven and Arc moving through development and grid connection.

What's next: CFS says SPARC is expected to reach scientific breakeven in 2027, and Arc is planned for Chesterfield County, Virginia.
