The European Commission launched a new Brussels team on Friday, July 31, 2026, to enforce the EU's AI Act as the bloc began applying a new round of obligations on Sunday, August 2, 2026, AP reported.
The rules that start Aug. 2 focus on transparency for AI systems that generate or manipulate content. In practical terms, providers and deployers may have to disclose when content is AI-generated or altered and, in some cases, add labels or watermarks under the Commission's AI Act framework and its labeling guidance.
The Commission says the new enforcement push is meant to cover more than content labeling. Its AI governance materials say oversight also extends to systemic risks such as cyber offense, harmful manipulation, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents, loss of control and threats to fundamental rights on the AI Office page.
AP also reported that the Commission is adding 38 people to its AI Office in Brussels, which the Commission describes as its central AI governance body and says now has more than 125 staff.
The AI Act entered into force on Aug. 1, 2024, but its obligations apply in phases. Aug. 2 marks one of those application dates, not the law's start date.
