Google links AI Mode to apps for tasks in Search

Google now lets AI Mode in Search connect to select apps to complete tasks.

Why it matters: The update moves Search closer to an operational layer for everyday software, not just a place to ask questions. That could change how users shop, create, and listen - and sharpen competition with other AI assistants pushing app integrations.

  • Google announced the update on July 16, 2026, with an initial U.S. rollout.
  • The first supported apps are Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music.
  • Google says users can add grocery ingredients to an Instacart cart, ask Canva for design templates and save a playlist to YouTube Music without leaving AI Mode.
  • Google says it is working with more partners and will add more app support soon.

Google is extending AI Mode in Search beyond chat-style answers and into task completion across apps. In a July 16 product announcement, the company said users can now connect select apps directly to AI Mode to get more done, starting with Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music.

The rollout began this week in the U.S., according to Google. The company said the first use cases include adding grocery ingredients to an Instacart cart, asking Canva for design templates and saving a playlist to YouTube Music without leaving AI Mode.

The move builds on work Google previously launched in the Gemini app and extends connected-app functionality into Search. Google has also been adding other agentic features to AI Mode this year, including reservations and other task-oriented capabilities announced earlier in 2026 in its I/O update.

Google said it is working with additional partners and plans to add more app support soon. Instacart said it is extending grocery integrations to Google’s AI Mode in Search after already launching grocery integrations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Google’s help documentation for Gemini connected apps also shows that some actions are limited, such as adding items to an Instacart cart but not placing or managing orders in the app.

The broader push suggests Google wants AI Mode to function as a more persistent operational layer, helped by personalization and sharing features the company has also added. As Google put it, AI is making Search "radically more helpful" so users can "get things done."
