An ICE officer shot a man in Manhattan on October 8, 2026.

Why it matters: Federal authorities have not explained what led to the gunfire or whether the wounded man was the operation's target. The unresolved account leaves the use-of-force questions central to the investigation.

  • The Associated Press reported the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on October 8, 2026, near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue.
  • In a preliminary account, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said agents surrounded a man and a five-year-old child in a vehicle before firing multiple rounds.
  • The wounded man was hospitalized, conscious and receiving treatment, according to The Associated Press.
  • The NYPD said its officers were not involved and were not at the scene when the shots were fired.

The Associated Press reported that a person was shot at about 4 p.m. on October 8, 2026, near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue. Marble Hill is a Manhattan neighborhood. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, conscious and receiving treatment, AP reported.

Law-enforcement sources identified the agents as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, according to CBS New York. The Department of Homeland Security said, "During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon." DHS had not initially provided a detailed account of what led to the shooting or why the agent fired.

In a preliminary account, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said agents surrounded a man and a five-year-old child in a vehicle before firing multiple rounds. He said the child was believed to be physically unharmed. Mamdani said he called President Donald Trump to demand an end to ICE enforcement actions in New York City.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called for a full and transparent federal account, saying, "New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why." The FBI sent an evidence-response team - a group that processes and documents evidence at a scene - to assist DHS investigators, according to CBS New York.

Mamdani's account remains preliminary. Authorities had not released body-camera, dashboard-camera, surveillance or cellphone video, and had not established why agents opened fire, whether the wounded man was the operation's target, or whether agents believed they faced an imminent threat.

By the numbers

  • 4 p.m. - Approximate time of the October 8, 2026 shooting
  • 5 years old - Age of the child Mamdani said was in the vehicle
  • Multiple rounds - Number of shots in Mamdani's preliminary account

Yes, but: The mayor's description of agents surrounding the man and child and firing multiple rounds was preliminary; authorities had not publicly established the circumstances that led to the shooting.

What's next: DHS and FBI investigators are expected to continue examining the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the ICE officer's use of a firearm.
