Nvidia said it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy for the Ohio project.
Why it matters: The deal links chip supply, power development and data-center construction for large-scale AI infrastructure. It also puts more capital behind the companies building the next phase of compute capacity.
- Nvidia said on Aug. 17, 2026 that it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy.
- The project is centered on the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Portsmouth, Ohio.
- Nvidia said OpenAI will build and operate the AI factory there, starting with 4.25 gigawatts of capacity and potentially scaling to 8 gigawatts.
- The Energy Department said in March 2026 that SB Energy plans 10 gigawatts of new power generation, including at least 9.2 gigawatts of natural gas generation, for the site.
Nvidia said it will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy as part of the buildout for an OpenAI-linked project at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Portsmouth, Ohio. The company said the investment covers defined portions of lease and power payments plus a residual-value commitment, rather than the full project cost. Nvidia's announcement
Nvidia said OpenAI will build and operate the AI factory at the site, starting with 4.25 gigawatts of capacity and potentially expanding to 8 gigawatts. OpenAI previously said its Stargate effort with SoftBank would aim to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for next-generation AI infrastructure, and Nvidia said it intended to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as each gigawatt is deployed.
