The shooting happened about 1:30 a.m. near the university's Quad Annexes in Ettrick, Virginia, and prompted a campus lockdown. Police later said the lockdown was lifted before the arrest because they did not believe there was an immediate threat to the campus community.
Police arrested Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, in connection with the shooting, AP reported. Chesterfield County police said Harris was held without bond and that they obtained eight felony warrants: four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
AP reported that the five wounded victims ranged in age from 17 to 23, and at least one injured person was a student at Virginia State University. One victim was in critical condition in earlier reporting.
Lt. James Lamb, commander of the Chesterfield County Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, said investigators had not yet pinned down all of the locations they were examining: "We don’t have specific locations that we are looking (at) yet as we are working on identifying them."
Virginia State University said in a statement that "The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority." Police said the investigation is ongoing, with help from the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
