Romania said it shot down a drone after repeated airspace incursions near Ukraine.

Why it matters: The incidents put a NATO border state on closer air-defense watch as Russia's war in Ukraine continues to press against alliance territory. Romania's response shows how quickly cross-border drone events can escalate into direct military action.

  • Romania said its air force shot down a drone that entered its airspace, according to AP.
  • Defense officials said at least 19 drones entered Romanian airspace in 2026 and 50 drones or fragments have been found since 2022, AP reported.
  • Romania's defense ministry said radar detected a drone near the Ukrainian border on July 25 and later issued another air alert on July 27, according to the ministry.
  • President Nicușor Dan called the repeated breaches "inadmissible and intolerable," Reuters reported.
