A Seoul court sentenced a care home director to 15 years on Sept. 2 for sexually assaulting disabled residents.

Why it matters: The ruling shows criminal penalties can follow abuse inside facilities meant to protect vulnerable adults. It also comes as South Korea faces renewed scrutiny of how disability-care institutions are monitored.

  • The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim, the director of Saekdongwon in Incheon's Ganghwa district, to 15 years in prison on Sept. 2.
  • The court found him guilty of sexually assaulting three residents and injuring one victim who resisted, Yonhap reported.
  • Kim was also barred from working at institutions serving children, adolescents and disabled people.
  • South Korean officials launched an interagency task force in February to investigate the allegations, according to Yonhap.

A Seoul court on Sept. 2 sentenced the director of Saekdongwon, a residential care facility for people with severe developmental disabilities in Incheon's Ganghwa district, to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting residents, according to Yonhap. The court also barred the man, identified only by his surname Kim, from working in institutions serving children, adolescents and disabled people.

Yonhap reported that the court found Kim guilty of sexually assaulting three residents and injuring one victim who resisted. BBC also reported the Sept. 2 sentencing and the abuse of three disabled residents.

The case drew official scrutiny earlier this year. In February, South Korean officials launched an interagency task force to investigate abuse allegations tied to the facility, and police questioned Kim after the allegations surfaced, Yonhap reported at the time. In a separate report, Yonhap said Kim denied most accusations when questioned.

The sentencing adds a criminal judgment to a case that had already prompted a state response and renewed attention on safeguards inside disability-care facilities.
