Kroenke Sports & Entertainment agreed Sept. 1, 2026, to buy the Angels from Arte Moreno.

Why it matters: The deal would put another major U.S. sports franchise under one of the industry’s most powerful owners, if MLB approves it. It could also shape future talks around the Angels’ media assets and Anaheim footprint, even though the stadium and parking lots are city-owned and not part of the sale.

  • Kroenke Sports & Entertainment reached a deal to buy controlling ownership of the Angels from Arte Moreno.
  • The announcement came Sept. 1, 2026, and the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending MLB approval.
  • Moreno will remain a minority owner, but the size of his retained stake was not disclosed.
  • The Angels’ regional television network and radio station are included in the sale, according to the club.
  • The stadium and parking lots are owned by the city and were not part of the transaction.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment has agreed to purchase controlling ownership of the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, according to AP and MLB.com. The deal was announced Sept. 1, 2026, and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending MLB approval.

Moreno, who has owned the team since 2003, will stay on as a minority owner. Neither the club nor league disclosed how large his retained stake will be. MLB.com said the sale was surprising because Moreno had said during spring training that he had no interest in selling, after exploring a sale in 2022 and backing away in early 2023.

The transaction expands Kroenke’s already wide sports portfolio. AP reported his holdings include the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and Arsenal, along with SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. The Angels said the team’s regional television network and radio station are included in the sale.

The stadium and parking lots are owned by the city and were not part of the transaction, according to the Los Angeles Times. That matters because ownership of the team does not automatically give Kroenke control of the physical ballpark site or its surrounding land, leaving future Anaheim redevelopment or lease talks separate from the franchise sale.

Moreno said in a statement, "The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise." Kroenke said, "The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market. We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization."

By the numbers

  • 2003 - The year Moreno bought the Angels.
  • 2027 - The expected first-quarter closing window for the deal, pending MLB approval.
  • 23 years - How long Moreno said his family has stewarded the franchise.

Yes, but: The sale is not final until MLB approves it.

What's next: MLB approval is the key next step, with closing expected in the first quarter of 2027.
