STAT reported Gilead is leaning harder into immunology after its Ouro Medicines deal.
Why it matters: The move shows where Gilead is putting capital beyond HIV and cancer, and it may shape how investors judge the company’s next growth leg. It also puts pressure on rivals pursuing autoimmune and inflammation drugs.
- STAT reported on Sept. 24 that Gilead executives are pitching inflammation and immunology as one of the company’s three core scientific areas.
- CFO Andy Dickinson told investors at the Cantor Global Healthcare Conference in September that inflammation and immunology is Gilead’s 'third leg of the stool.'
- Gilead said in first-quarter 2026 remarks that its inflammation pipeline had nearly doubled since 2019 and included 10 clinical-stage assets.
- The company said its pending Ouro Medicines deal could add gamgertamig, with phase 3 registrational trials - late-stage studies that can support approval - in select autoimmune diseases as early as 2027.
Gilead is once again making the case that immunology is a core growth area, not a side project. In a Sept. 24 STAT report, the company’s executives said inflammation and immunology sits alongside virology and oncology in Gilead’s long-term strategy. CFO Andy Dickinson reportedly told investors at the Cantor Global Healthcare Conference earlier this month that immunology is the company’s 'third leg of the stool.'
The company has been signaling the same message in its own disclosures. In first-quarter 2026 prepared remarks, Gilead said its inflammation pipeline had nearly doubled since 2019 and included 10 clinical-stage assets across small molecules, antibodies, bispecifics and cell therapies. Those remarks also said Gilead was targeting phase 3 registrational trials - the late-stage studies used to support potential approval - in select autoimmune diseases as early as 2027 for gamgertamig, the lead asset from its pending Ouro Medicines acquisition.
Gilead said in announcing the deal that Ouro would add a first-in-class T cell engager program for autoimmune diseases. The company said the broader inflammation portfolio includes work in primary biliary cholangitis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus.
Gilead’s pipeline page, updated Aug. 4, listed 53 clinical-stage programs across virology, oncology and inflammation and said the company is on track to deliver 10+ transformative therapies by 2030.
By the numbers
- 53 - Gilead said it had 53 clinical-stage programs across virology, oncology and inflammation as of Aug. 4, 2026.
- 10 - Gilead said its inflammation pipeline includes 10 clinical-stage assets.
- 2027 - Gilead said phase 3 registrational trials for gamgertamig could start as early as 2027.
Yes, but: The story still depends on whether Gilead can move these assets into later-stage trials and eventual approvals.
What's next: Gilead said phase 3 registrational trials for gamgertamig could begin as early as 2027.
