Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said the confrontation began as a verbal altercation in a school bathroom and escalated into a physical fight before one student was shot at about 2:15 p.m. The injured student was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Moulton said a school resource officer arrived quickly, applied tourniquets and stayed until emergency responders arrived. He said the suspect was caught about an hour later in a neighborhood roughly a half-mile from the school.
"Today a call that we train for every year happened to come to Houston County," Moulton said. "The school threat protocol and our training was followed perfectly today."
Houston County Schools Superintendent Richard Rogers said Warner Robins High School would be closed for students on Thursday and Friday and for staff on Thursday, with crisis counselors available afterward. "We’re going to focus on healing," he said.
Warner Robins is in Houston County, about 102 miles southeast of Atlanta. Houston County Schools says Warner Robins High School has a school resource officer assignment under the Houston County Sheriff's Office.
