Tesla filed two recalls in China covering 2.98 million vehicles.
Why it matters: The recalls rank among Tesla's largest China-specific safety actions. They could affect repair costs, brand perception and the company's regulatory ties in a key market.
- Tesla filed two recall actions with China's State Administration for Market Regulation on Aug. 21, 2026.
- The door-handle recall covers 2,975,910 vehicles in total, including China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S models.
- The driver-monitoring recall covers 2,740,642 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China.
- China said the door-handle fix starts Sept. 25, 2026, while the driver-monitoring software recall takes effect immediately.
Tesla is recalling 2,975,910 vehicles in China in two separate safety actions, according to China's State Administration for Market Regulation. One recall addresses a door-handle defect; the other targets the system that warns drivers when they are not paying attention while assisted steering is engaged.
In the door-handle recall, the regulator said emergency mechanical releases may be difficult to identify and use because they blend into the interior color. In a severe crash with low-voltage power loss, that could make escape or outside rescue harder. Tesla said it will add warning labels and push an over-the-air update that lowers windows after a crash to reduce the risk, according to the regulator notice.
The second recall covers Tesla's driver-monitoring software in Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Tesla said the current system may not warn drivers enough when they are distracted while assisted steering is active. The company said it will add in-cabin camera monitoring through an OTA update, and vehicles that cannot receive the update remotely will be repaired at service centers, according to the same filing.
AP reported that the action comes amid a broader Chinese auto-safety campaign involving more than 4 million vehicles and increased scrutiny of hidden or flush door handles. Reuters reported China plans to ban concealed door handles from 2027.
