Tucson police said the Aug. 31 shooting outside Venture-N was a targeted attack motivated by hate toward LGBTQIA+ people, after initially describing the case as a possible hate crime. AP reported that investigators found a note listing several LGBTQIA+-associated businesses and said early evidence suggested the suspect confronted the victims in the parking lot before opening fire.
The shooting happened shortly after midnight at Venture-N, 1239 N. 6th Ave. Tucson police said Ousman Ceesay had no apparent connection to the victims and had recently arrived in the Tucson area, according to AP. Police also said he never tried to enter the bar and fired a 9mm handgun at the scene.
Local reporting from Tucson.com said the city increased patrols around LGBTQIA+ establishments and coordinated with community organizations after the shooting.
