OpenAI said a technical issue disrupted access to Daybreak Blue, its cybersecurity program.

Why it matters: Daybreak Blue gives approved users access to OpenAI tools for defensive cybersecurity work. Any interruption can delay research and highlights how tightly controlled access to restricted AI systems remains.

  • Researchers told TechCrunch they lost access to Daybreak Blue on Aug. 19.
  • OpenAI said the problem was on its side, not a policy change.
  • The company said a limited set of users will need to re-verify to keep access.
  • OpenAI split Daybreak into Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red in an Aug. 10 expansion.

OpenAI said a technical issue affected access to Daybreak Blue, its cybersecurity access program, after researchers reported being locked out on Aug. 19. TechCrunch said it spoke with five researchers who reported the disruption, and OpenAI told affected users the issue was on the company's side rather than a policy change.

In a message shared with one researcher, OpenAI said, "This was an issue on our end, and not the user experience we want to deliver." The company also said a "limited set of users' access to Daybreak Blue is no longer active and they will need to re-verify to maintain their access." TechCrunch

The company expanded Daybreak on Aug. 10 and split it into two tracks: Daybreak Blue for approved defensive workflows and Daybreak Red for authorized vulnerability research, exploit validation, security testing and red teaming. OpenAI announcement

OpenAI has not said how many users were affected or whether all access has been restored.

By the numbers

  • 5 - researchers TechCrunch said it spoke with about the access disruption
  • 2 - Daybreak tracks after OpenAI's Aug. 10 expansion

Yes, but: OpenAI has not disclosed the scale of the disruption, so the full impact on researchers remains unclear.

What's next: OpenAI has not said when any remaining re-verification will be completed or whether additional users will be restored.
